Good News...Bad News Regarding the Friends Challenge

The bad news first...
I didn't hit the friends challenge goal of making 50 new friends by April 23rd at 12:01 a.m.

The good news next...
I did make some awesome new friends who joined my blog in the hope that we might inspire each other in the coo-coo, crazy, craft blog universe...the comments were very welcomed and the support was cherished.

So, as a thank you, to those 16 new friends I did make I decided to give away one of my t shirt hats.  The winner may pick any one hat from my gallery page (except the red and black one that I've already worn).

Drum roll please...

The winner of my "I didn't make goal but changed my mind and did a drawing anyway" is:

The winner is lucky number nine (9).  Miss Devonay.  You may select one of the t shirt hats from my gallery (except the red one 'cause its been worn).  Take a look at the hats in my gallery and email at junkinspired@gmail.com with the particulars!

Thanks, everyone for helping me get started!

Bye for now.  (Green is good.  Junk is good.)  Cynthia.

Recycled Bottles into Altered Art and What about Plastic?

Recycling bottles (instead of buying new) for your altered art can be a rewarding experience...in the spirit of Earth Day, April 22nd,  I'm posting some little pieces I made with recycled glass.

Like most altered artists I hate to throw anything away and such was the case with the bottles and jars I used here.  I could see that they had potential so I set them aside until I was ready to start altering.

The bottle, above, was easy to alter because it had decorative lines molded into the glass... I followed those lines and embellished with velvet leaves, rayon ribbon, gold metallic paint, jewelry charms, etc.

This jar was once a pickle jar that I embellished with a plastic pig.  He was adorned with gold metallic paint and wings...I thought he was the ultimate in whimsy - tongue in cheek art.

Paper, paint, faux leopard fabric spruced up this bottle.  Of course, I liked this bottle immediately for the crown top (and that may be why I bought it in the first place...not even sure what liquid was inside...)

Handmade Isn't Enough Guest Post from freckleLips

"Handmade Isn't Enough" is a guest post from a very talented and energetic blogger from freckleLips.  I met Sammi on Etsypreneur and I am ever so glad I did.  Her spirit and willingness to support others is amazing and my new little blog is more visible, now, because of her support.  Please read this insightful post from Sammi, about becoming a better crafter, and then head over and visit her at freckleLips...your day will be brighter because you did!

My daughter’s research poster for her 2nd grade class looks like it was made by a handmade business owner. There are vintage buttons and upcycled paper. The edges of the pictures are punched and the birds’ name is hanging from a mini banner across the top of the poster board.

Handmade has taken over my life.

Everywhere I go I pick up a bit here, a bit there. I don’t mean in the shopping sense, although I do a little tiny bit of that too. I mean inspiration. Motivation. Did you know Target sells fabric birthday flag banners now? I can’t go anywhere without finding a cupcake topper.

It’s everywhere - People embracing their inner creative child. If you are reading this, you probably are creative too. You might even have a creative blog or handmade shop. Handmade used to be almost underground – now it seems very close to mainstream.

So I’m going to ask you to do something a little difficult. I want you to

1.     1. STOP
2.     2. BREATHE
3.     3. JOURNAL
4.     4. CREATE SOMETHING ORIGINAL

1 is pretty easy. You can stop for just a second.
2 is a little tougher. Really breathe. Deep breaths.
3 is hard for a lot of people. It can be one page. Or one paragraph. But typing on a laptop in Starbucks doesn’t count. Even if you have to steal a napkin. Journal for a minute. With a pen. Or pencil. And let it out.
4 is the most difficult ever. It’s been very tough for me. Sometimes I think if I see one more fricking gift tag* on Etsy I’m going to hurl myself in front of an ice cream truck. (I mean just to stop him so I can get some ice cream!)

Seriously. Glean inspiration from the things around you, the people you love, the places you go. Create something you haven’t seen. It doesn’t have to be sellable. (is that a word?) It just has to be original.

Maybe it will open your eyes to the endless possibilities. Don’t run a shop because you love handmade and want to be part of the scene. That’s an okay reason, but that’s why we have 47,000 gift tags for sale and almost as many octopus necklaces.

Do you work with acrylic? Try fabric. Do you work with beads? Try mixed media.
Being handmade shouldn’t be “enough” – let’s make something original. Beautiful.
And when you do – send me a picture.  I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

*In the spirit of honesty and disclosure I’ve sold a few gift tags. But mine were cuter/more special/just the exact same as every other gift tag ever made.

Best Easter Bonnets

Easter is almost upon us but you still have time to track down a cute Easter Bonnet for you or a little one in your life.  I've done some snooping on Etsy and found these adorable handmade hats for little girls and big girls...take a look!

Photo from BowsandGiggles | Etsy

My first "best bonnet" is from Bows and Giggles.  This sweet little hat could be worn on Easter Day and then used as a sun bonnet into the summer months.  Too cute with exchangeable flower attached.

Photo from MissRubySue's | Etsy

My second "best bonnet" is from Miss Ruby Sue's.  This is for the more chic baby girl who loves all things frilly.  Oh how I wish I had a baby to sport this unique, sweet hat.

My third "best bonnet" is from Boring Sidney on Etsy.  There is nothing boring about this hat in all its elegance.  If I didn't wear jeans most of the time this would be on my must have list.  Although...it might be cute with jeans and a fancy blouse...hmmm.

My fourth "best bonnet" is from Green Trunk Designs, Etsy, and it is for the more casual dresser.  If I were honest this is really more akin to my personal style because I seldom dress-up these days.

Photo from Topsy Turvy | Etsy

My fifth "best bonnet" is from Topsy Turvy Design, Etsy, and it harkens back to the Victorian Days but yet would be very suitable for today's Easter with a short, brown or green dress.  I think those who like Steampunk would love this little topper.  I don't know how she manages to create whimsy and sophistication at the same time...but that is what I see in this hat.

I love all of these hats - and the ones I featured are in no particular order of fondness.  Each designer has their own style and their own personality that is crafted into their handmade bonnets. The love for their craft is evident as you browse their shops...something I re-discover each time I venture into Etsy.  So if you are thinking about a little Easter Bonnet, or something to welcome spring, go handmade - you are sure to be pleased.

The links below will take you directly to the hats featured... if you have time be sure to check out the other listings...these shops are nummy.

Its Been Quite A Day!

I started my Monday off with tons of plans to edit photos, write posts, get a good start on the week...but some days "the best laid plans of mice and women often go awry".

This is all I have to offer you after two and a half hours of work...

Without going on a rant I'll summarize all the events that lead to one lonely picture...
  • Slow home computer, got locked up about 6 times
  • Decided to save images to my pin drive and go to library
  • Takes an hour to save photos to drive
  • Got in auto and drove to library
  • Library has blocked FotoFlexer from being used (why????)
  • Found a work around and started to upload photo from pin drive
  • Computer's pin drive doesn't work...move to another computer
  • New computer won't allow me to work around and use Fotoflexer
  • Found Picnik...don't like it as well, but I had to produce something today...
  • Saved alternative photo option...not nearly as cute as original...but hey, its been a tough day
Exhausted and exasperated (deep sigh) I have to say I'm sorry but its all I muster up for a post...
and now I am going to the IT man here at the library to ask what happened to allowing Fotoflexer...then I'll regroup and start my day's journey, again...and probably get an iced coffee for a little treat.

Anyone else have a Monday story to share?

I hope you all had a Happy Easter with your family and friends.  Have a joyful week.

Bye for now.  Cynthia
